1937 O'Mahony Diner roof tear down

After 70 years it's not surprising that the roof needed a major restoration. Fortunately the design and construction of the original roof was such that the roof was built to last almost forever. The Jerry O'Mahony Diner company typically offered LIFETIME WARRANTIES with their roofs. Since the Company doesn't exist anymore we'll have to take the task on ourselves.
We started with the flat seam galvanized roof, weak from exposure and rust. Peel off the original galvanized and inspect the tongue & groove substrate.
Remove the substrate where well worn to determine the extent of work needed. Determined: COMPLETE new roof needed.
Only a handful of the original curved rafters were still usable. All the steel joists were in very good shape needing only sanding and new paint.
All the steel joists were inspected, cleaned and painted. New rafters were mounted on each side of the steel joists. With new rafters, spacers and trim the roof structure is rock solid.
